EMS Deputy Chief, Derrick Buffam

Deputy Chief Buffam

Deputy Chief Derrick Buffam has over 30 years of experience in EMS in the Temiskaming District. Some of Derrick’s credentials include a Bachelor of Science degree, Certification as a Primary Care Paramedic and he is a Certified Municipal Manager level III, EMS Professional. Derrick is a Recipient of the Governor General of Canada Medal for Exemplary Emergency Medical Service awarded in 2010. Derrick is responsible for EMS Quality Assurance.

EMS Deputy Chief, James Besley

Deputy Chief Besley

Deputy Chief James Besley has over 30 years of EMS experience and has worked in Simcoe County before joining the management team of Temiskaming District EMS in 2013. James’ experience includes the direct supervision of paramedics as well as special projects and training. He is an Ontario Safety League Certified Vehicle Accident Investigator, and holds a certificate as an Investigator/Inspector from the Ontario Council on Licensure, Enforcement and Regulation. James is a Recipient of the Governor General of Canada Medal for Exemplary Emergency Medical Service awarded in 2014. James is responsible for Logistics and Training.

EMS Deputy Chief, Steven Beaton

Deputy Chief Beaton

Deputy Chief Steven Beaton has over 35 years of EMS experience and has worked briefly in North Bay prior to starting his career in Temiskaming Shores. Throughout his years of service, Steven has functioned as a Base Hospital Coordinator/Instructor, Regional Training Instructor-Trainer, Inspector for the Provincial Ambulance Service Review Accreditation Team, and Service Level Instructor. Steven is a Recipient of the Governor General of Canada Medal for Exemplary Emergency Medical Service awarded in 2005. Steven is responsible for EMS Operations.

EMS Chief, John McCarthy

Deputy Chief McCarthy

Chief John McCarthy has nearly 30 years of EMS experience. His previous years of employment saw him working in management positions at Hamilton EMS in the operations and training divisions. He has also worked as a Provincial Training Coordinator for the Ambulance Branch of the MOHLTC. In 2008 he came to Timiskaming and accepted the position of EMS Deputy Chief, and in 2016 he was promoted to the position of EMS Paramedic Chief. Chief McCarthy is a Recipient of the Governor General of Canada Medal for Exemplary Emergency Medical Service awarded in 2010. Currently an active inspector for the Provincial Ambulance Service Review Accreditation Team and he holds previous certification and experience as a lead evaluator for the paramedic equivalency examination team in Toronto; in Ambulance Dispatch Operations; and air ambulance as well as firefighter operations, training, suppression and has diplomas in Fire Service Management and Administration, Fire Prevention and Fire Technology.
