Paramedic Recruitment


The District of Timiskaming Social Services Administration Board hires Primary Care Paramedics periodically to provide emergency medical services within the District.

To be considered for employment, prospective candidates must have completed a college or university level paramedic education and training program and at least 450 hours in preceptorship to practice clinical skills and engage in patient contact, before writing the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s Advanced Emergency Medical Care Exam (AEMCA).

Email Correspondence
The DTSSAB communicates primarily using email. Applicants are responsible for checking their email regularly. You will receive an email confirmation once your application is successfully submitted.

Applicant Evaluation and Assessment

Applications will be reviewed to determine the most qualified candidates invited to continue in the hiring process. This may include an initial online screening assessment, telephone screening, entrance exam and in-person interview.  Additionally, candidates may participate in the following:

  • Practical Scenario Testing: a hands-on scenario testing according to provincial BLS and ALS directives using EMS equipment. The candidate responds to a call with a partner and is required to treat the call as real, from departure from the EMS base to the hospital.

  • Ambulance Driving Test: the candidate is required to drive an ambulance with an evaluator and is tested on proper driving techniques through regular non-emergency driving, reversing and a small obstacle course.


Reference Checks

Upon being invited for an interview, candidates are required to complete a consent form with the names and contacts of three (3) supervisory or professional references. Personal references are not accepted.

References are only contacted if candidates are successful in the interview and assessment stages and are being considered for final selection.


Offers of Employment

Successful candidates may receive a verbal offer, followed by a formal, written conditional offer of employment.

Paramedics receiving a conditional offer of employment must be prepared to provide copies, and show originals when requested, of the following:

  • Criminal record check/Vulnerable sector check: conducted by the Ontario Provincial Police.

  • Valid class F driver's license/Photo id: a provincial equivalent may be provided.

  • Statement of driving record: this 3-year record lists license status, Highway Traffic Act and/or Criminal Code convictions and points accumulated within the previous 12 months and must have been requested no more than 60 days prior to the date of the written offer.

  • Educational credentials: a copy of the high school and college diploma to confirm program of studies is required.

  • A-EMCA certificate: a copy of the certificate or a letter by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care confirming a positive exam mark (until a certificate is received) is required.

  • CPR and First Aid certification: proof of current CPR and first aid certification is necessary.

  • Proof of Immunization/Free of communicable diseases: form provided by the Employer.

  • Pre-employment medical assessment and post-job offer screening: candidates must receive a passing grade regarding their ability to meet essential position requirements, including physical, mental and other job demands, recognizing and acknowledging the provisions of and the Employer's obligations pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.

Testing is currently completed in Temiskaming Shores, Ontario. Unless otherwise notified, the DTSSAB is responsible for the cost of the initial test. Accommodation and travel expenses are incurred by the candidate. Details are provided in the written offer.

Confidential medical information is not shared with the Employer. The Employer will receive confirmation of the final results indicating 'pass' or 'fail'. A 'fail' grade renders the conditional offer of employment null and void.

  • Base hospital certification: in order to perform delegated medical acts in the province of Ontario, paramedics must be certified by the Base Hospital Program. Individuals are evaluated on their ability to apply the provincial medical directives safely and effectively. Evaluation methods may include, but are not limited to, high fidelity simulation scenarios, skills stations, candidate interviews and written evaluations.

  • OASIS card: obtaining an OASIS card and ID number involves completing a Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) form, documenting employment requirements and providing a photo, for Ministry approval.

  • Non-mandatory certification: certification or training in the following areas are not required for employment DTSSAB; however, would be considered an asset: 12-lead, IV, defensive driving, CBRNE/HazMat training.
