EMS Fleet
The EMS fleet consists of nine ambulances; three are stationed at each of three dedicated bases North, South and Central. The fleet also consists of three Paramedic Response Units (PRUs) at the North, South and Central bases. These vehicles are used by EMS Deputy Chiefs to respond to emergency calls if an ambulance may be delayed in response. As well an additional fourth PRU is staffed by the EMS Chief for deployment to major incidents or emergency responses during routine travels throughout the district.
The PRU may also be used in large scale incidents where the Deputy Chief or Chief is responsible for scene safety; triage and overall incident commend.
The EMS fleet also consists of two First Response Team Vehicles that assist in the provision of an immediate medical response, to communities that, due to their distance from the three main bases, would result in a delay in ambulance response. These teams are made up of trained volunteers that respond within their communities to help patients until the ambulance arrives. These teams are currently located in Larder Lake and Latchford.
Introduction of the Off-Road Response Unit
Due to the generous support from community partners, the DTSSAB EMS introduced the ORU, or "Off-road Response Unit" in Spring of 2021.
The ORU and it’s accompanying fully enclosed response trailer, provide access to traditionally difficult to reach locations, including, but not limited to:
Remote work sites
Snowmobile/ATV trails
Areas impeded by extreme weather
Farming areas
The modifications on the unit enable the enclosed response trailer to serve as a mobile command post. The enclosed and climate-controlled compartment at the back of the ORU allows for safe transport of EMS paramedics and patients in an environment comparable to a traditional ambulance.
DTSSAB EMS Paramedics have received basic training on operations of the ORU and will continue to train and develop the program in the future. Stay tuned for more details on this great initiative, which Is new territory for the DTSSAB EMS and to most paramedic services in Ontario.
